The pilot clicks and dies. Or the burner lights, then drops out after a few minutes. Or you smell gas near the hearth. On standing-pilot log sets, the usual culprit is a weak thermocouple or a dirty thermopile. Millivolt output falls. The gas valve stops holding open. Spider webs inside the pilot hood do this too. Mud daubers love an orifice that sits unused most of the year.

North Hills has two different setups. Pre-1980 masonry fireplaces with clay tile liners, usually with a log set dropped in later. And 1980s-onward factory-built prefab boxes with class-A pipe and a chase cover. The prefab units are the fussier repair. Parts are model-specific. The rating plate is behind the lower louver or under the firebox floor. Photograph it before calling anyone.

Log sets installed by a previous owner are where we find real problems. Dampers not clamped open. Logs shifted onto the burner ports, which makes sooting and carbon. Wrong clearance to the lintel. Blocked flues from bird and rodent nesting.

Some repairs we will not recommend. A rusted-through chase cover feeding water onto the firebox means the box, not the valve, is the issue. Separated flue tiles from seismic shift change the whole conversation.
