When the pilot drops out or the glass turns gray

You flip the switch and get nothing. Or the pilot lights, holds a moment, then dies. Or the logs look sooty and the glass has a gray film. These are different faults with different causes. A dying pilot usually means a weak thermopile or thermocouple. Millivolt output falls as the junction ages. Dust and lint on the pilot hood make it worse. Fireplaces here sit unused most of the year, and burner ports collect valley dust and spider webbing in the venturi.

Gas log sets dropped into 1960s-70s raised-hearth brick fireplaces are common in North Hills. Two things get missed on those. The damper must be clamped partly open and stay that way. And log placement matters to the fraction of an inch. A log sitting into the flame path causes impingement, soot and carbon monoxide.

Sealed inserts are a different animal. The door gasket flattens, the glass seal leaks, and glowing fiber or ember material gets packed over the ports where it does not belong. That alone blackens glass.

On 1980s-onward prefab units we also look up. Rusted chase covers and failed storm collars show up constantly. So do missing spark arrestor caps, and that cap is a brush-fire issue, not just code.
